Tartan Day guide launch

With the start of the Tartan Day Scotland Festival less than a month away, it’s time to start planning your celebrations.

The newly-published, free Tartan Day Scotland Festival 2013 Events Guide lists the multitude of special events taking place in and around Angus between March 29 and April 7 to mark this global celebration of Scotland and the Scots – and there’s going to be no shortage of things to do or places to go.

“Judging by the packed programme of events, the Tartan Day Scotland Festival 2013 has certainly hit a chord with businesses, organisations and voluntary groups throughout Angus,” said Provost Helen Oswald. “The Events Guide highlights just how many fabulous events will be taking place in and around the county of Angus during this year’s Tartan Day Scotland Festival.”

Key events taking place during the Tartan Day Scotland Festival include the Tayroots Family History Day, the now-traditional April 6 re-enactment of the Signing of the Declaration of Arbroath and the Tartan Spirit Fashion Show. However, flicking though the packed pages of the Events Guide reveals the true extent and variety of events taking place during the week of Tartan Day celebrations.

Many of the county’s museums and libraries will be holding Tartan Day exhibitions, craft days, competitions and workshops, as well as storytelling sessions and, at Monifieth Library, a haggis hunt. There will also be Highland Dancing competitions, performances by local pipe bands, the Tartan Day Parade along Carnoustie High Street and an evening of Scottish-themed debates and short speeches presented by Strathmore and Arbroath Speakers Clubs.

There’s no shortage of evening events either, with folk music and jazz concerts at Hospitalfield House, an evening celebrating Scottish music and culture with Anna Massie and Mairearad Green at Montrose’s Links Hotel. There’s also the opportunity to spend an evening studying Angus Archives’ records, documents and letters, a fascinating collection which stretches back 800 years.
