FORFAR Athletic started their new community coaching on the impressive Station Park pitch at the weekend.

The Loons’ 3G surface was put in its place during the close season with the funding coming from the Scottish government’s CashBack for Communities scheme which uses the proceeds of crime to support local projects.

The CashBack for Communities programme takes the ill-gotten gains of crime which is recovered through the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and invests the money into community programmes, facilities and activities largely, but not exclusively, for young people at risk of turning to crime and anti-social behaviour as a way of life.

Part of a wider programme is to encourage the community to use such facilities.

On Saturday, a training session, with 60 boys and girls aged from six to 14, was led by Forfar assistant boss Ian Campbell and first team players Barry Sellars and Keith Gibson.

As part of the package, the participants were also given a ticket for the afternoon’s home clash with Stenhousemuir and the opportunity to have their picture taken with the Scottish Government sponsored Communities League Cup on its way around a tour of the country.

Forfar secretary David McGregor said: “This first session drew the maximum number of youngsters we could take and hopefully the programme will continue to be a success.”
