STAFFING ISSUES INCONVENIENCE

ANGUS Council has offered assurances that it will not pull the plug on public toilets at the busy West Port in Forfar.

The "Dispatch" was contacted last week (August 12) by a local resident who spoke of his fears that an important facility in the town was to closed after witnessing eratic opening hours at the public conveniences.

He claimed the toilets in Craig O'Loch Road were open "at all times of day and night" and that he had been informed the council was to close the facilities due to running costs and vandalism.

He said: "I was told it was costing a lot of money to maintain the toilets and that they were on the chopping list due to vandalism.

"But I would have a real issue if the toilets were to close.

"These are the first toilets visitors to the town can use and the nearest toilets are either at the Buttermarket or the cubicle in the Myre, which is not ideal for people in wheelchairs."

He also took issue with the fact the Craig O'Loch Road toilets are handy for children coming home from school, and for elderly residents walking into town from the Glamis Road.

He added: "The council has been closing the toilets at odd times of the day, yet when I walked past last night at 10.30 they were still open.

"These toilets are necessary for locals and visitors and I wouldn't like to see them closed. The council closed the toilets at the Greens years ago as they said it cost too much money to run them and I wouldn't like to see the same happen at Craig O'Loch Road."

A spokesperson for Angus Council said: "The public toilets in Craig O'Loch Road have been subject to irregular opening and closing recently, due to a combination of staff shortages and holiday leave.

"If left open, they are being monitored on a daily basis by a supervisor to ensure cleanliness. There has been no decision made by the council to close them."
