Solutions sought over Dunfermline closure

GRAEME Dey, Angus South MSP, and Councillor Iain Gaul are in talks with the Dunfermline Building Society over plans to withdraw local access to their services in Kirriemuir.

Nationwide, who own the Dunfermline Building Society, have announced that as of April 30 this year access to the third party agency located at Irvine Adamson in Bank Street is set to be withdrawn.

Initially they advised Mr Dey that customers who do not hold telephone based accounts would have to travel to the nearest available Dunfermline branch in Dundee to carry out transactions.

Working with Councillor Gaul, however, Mr Dey has now secured a partial easing of the situation, albeit one which will require customers to transfer accounts. He said: “Nationwide insist that withdrawing local access for Kirriemuir based Dunfermline Building Society customers was a mutual decision on the part of the third party agency and themselves.

“Disappointingly they have declined to provide details of the number of customers who will be affected by it and a breakdown of how many of these people don’t currently have any access to telephone accounts. However, they acknowledge that a number of local folk will be impacted by the decision.

“It simply may not be practical for these individuals to travel to Dundee to carry out their banking. At Iain Gaul’s suggestion we asked Nationwide to consider allowing Dunfermline customers to use their office in Forfar. They have said that would not be possible owing to different IT systems and product ranges.

“However, they have said that if being able to carry out transactions in Forfar rather than Dundee would better suit Dunfermline counter customers then staff in Forfar would be happy to assist in setting up alternative Nationwide accounts.”

Councillor Gaul added: “We realise that this isn’t a perfect solution but it would allow Dunfermline customers from Kirriemuir and the surrounding area to be able to access counter facilities relatively close by rather than face an inconvenient trail, possibly by public transport, into Dundee to carry out a transaction.”
