Soft fruit talk at Garden Club

THE FRIOCKHEIM and District Garden Club met on Wednesday at Friockheim School.

The guest speaker was Mr Willie Porter of West Scryne, by Carnoustie, who gave an interesting talk on the development of his family business, Angus Soft Fruits.

From modest beginnings growing strawberries on his farm in the 1960s, the firm is now a multi-million pound enterprise supplying soft fruit all year round to major supermarkets. He explained how the present very sophisticated level of technology in soft fruit growing was dictated by the requirements of the supermarkets for a supply of high quality fruit over an extended period. His talk was illustrated by photographs showing details of how the fruit is grown in polythene tunnels.

A vote of thanks was proposed by Elizabeth Carcary.

The next meeting of the club is a joint Christmas dinner on Wednesday, December 5, with the Friockheim Historical Society at Colliston Inn.
