Revised museum opening hours in Angus

OPENING times of the museums in Angus are to be altered for the first time since the 1980s, and will now open from Tuesday to Saturday inclusive, closing on Mondays.

This is in line with opening patterns for other United Kingdom and European museums, and delivers a required budget saving.

The revised opening times, which come into effect on 1 April, will apply to Arbroath’s Signal Tower Museum, Brechin Town House Museum, Forfar’s Meffan Institute, Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum, and Montrose Museum. Signal Tower Museum will also continue to open on Sunday afternoons in July and August.

Vice-Convener of Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Jeanette Gaul said: “Over the years, different opening hours – including evenings and Sundays- have been trialled but not proved popular.

A pattern of five-day consecutive opening from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no lunch time closure seems to be the best arrangement to meet the needs of visitors to the museums. We will, of course, continue to make arrangements to open in the evenings for groups or organisations wishing a special tour.”

Councillor Gaul added: “I hope that, as in previous years, visitors to Angus and local residents alike will enjoy visiting our museums and viewing the many items of interest we hold in the collections.”
