Residents re-assured on UNICEF collectors

RESIDENTS in both the east and west ends of Forfar contacted the “Dispatch” last week to express concern about the legitimacy of those who arrived in local streets canvassing for financial support for UNICEF UK.

On the first occasion residents in Yeaman Street were surprised after two car-loads of fund-raisers arrived, despite the area being clearly marked out as a “No Cold Calling” area run by Neighbourhood Watch.

One householder was contacted on two separate occasions and was asked to take out a direct debit to support UNICEF UK.

It was a similar situation along at Lochview Terrace when another householder was approached by two separate teams.

When contacted last week the charity confirmed their fund-raising teams had been in the area, knocking on people’s doors.

Angus Council had been informed and, according to the spokesperson, the fund-raisers should all have been wearing cyan UNICEF branded jackets and an ID badge.

She added: “They would have been talking to people about regular giving to UNICEF, and taking direct debit details from those who sign up.

“Our charity fund-raisers are employed by an agency and approach the public for direct debit donations or regular giving.

“They do obtain people’s details – often using forms and a clipboard. However, they will always have identification and wear a UNICEF branded uniform.”
