RECOGNITION FOR JIM'S CONTRIBUTION TO ROTARY

A VERY special presentation was made at the recent meeting of the Forfar Rotary Club.

President David Stobbs presented the Paul Harris Fellowship to Jim Nicoll and with his congratulations recalled the history and significance of this accolade.

David said: "The Rotary movement was founded by Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905. It developed from a single club to the worldwide organisation we know today.

"The Paul Harris Award was set up in memory of his work, to recognise outstanding contributions to the ideals of Rotary. It can be awarded to anyone whether they be Rotarians or not.

"In our club's history the award has only been made to very few members over the years for exceptional service above and beyond the norm.

"The recipient is then known as a Paul Harris Fellow and receives a special lapel badge and a citation signed by the President of Rotary International.

"Jim Nicoll joined the club in 1995. Despite his shy and retiring nature he soon launched himself into fund-raising for local and International charities.

"His successes in fund-raising were the selling of the Special Rotary Malt Whisky and the Foreign Coin Collection at the time the Euro was introduced but it was Marafun that proved to be the biggest success."

Dave Arnot then told club members of his personal knowledge of Jim, from the time they first knew each other from their Scouting days and through their working lives.

He stated they had many an argument but never a falling out and their friendship is still as strong today.

Alex Mill then paid tribute to how Jim, with single-minded determination, took on to organise the first of his four Marafuns.

He had the vision to see that it could be done and bullied and cajoled the club into submission.
