A GROUP of S3 pupils from Forfar Academy have received national recognition for an anti-bullying drama project.
The pupils took top spot in a competition run by the respectme campaign – the Scottish Government funded national anti-bullying service.
Every year respectme runs a competition and receives 2,000 entries from children and young people from across Scotland.
This year’s theme was ‘What Bullying Means to Me’, and there were three categories: artistic, creative writing and performance, with Forfar Academy adjudged to have submitted the winning entry in the performance category.
Pamela Graham, campaigns and communications manager with respectme, said: “Every year we are amazed by the incredibly high standard of entries we receive for the Anti-Bullying Week competition.
“From posters and poems to sculptures and short films, the range of submissions provided us with a very real insight into what bullying means to children and young people in Scotland.
“The short film produced by Forfar Academy was both creative and thought provoking and we congratulate them on their winning entry.”
respectme works with adults to build their capacity to deal with bullying behaviour amongst children and young people, through free training, campaigns and policy development - and supported the council on the development and launch of its anti-bullying policy.
Education convener Sheena Welsh said: “In Angus we are committed to tackling bullying, and ensuring that our schools are safe learning environments.
“We work closely with our schools to prevent and address bullying, and I commend the pupils and staff at Forfar Academy for coming up with such a creative way to promote the anti-bullying message and congratulate them on their award.”
The Forfar Academy pupils were supported in the project by drama teachers Paul Harrison and Pauline Gibbs.
“The pupils were enthusiastic about the project and came up with the idea of producing a drama about bullying seen through the eyes of someone being bullied. I am delighted their hard work has been recognised with this award,” said Paul.

Anti-Bullying Week runs from Monday, November 19, to Friday, November 23, and this year’s competition winners will receive their prizes at an event at the Scottish Parliament on Thursday, November 22.
