PUTTING BRAKES ON 'BOY RACERS'

THE nuisance caused by the antics of 'boy-racers' was highlighted at this month's meeting of Forfar Community Council (Forfar Dispatch 26.08.10).

Members heard of a particular group of youths who drive round and round the town, whilst others are using approach roads to Kirriemuir to leave tyre marks on the road.

The nuisance factor prompted a deputation from Manor Court to address the meeting, telling members the noise from the cars stopped them from leaving their windows open.

And it wasn't only drivers of cars who were causing a nuisance; scooter drivers have been spotted chasing school pupils along pavements near Forfar Academy.

The meeting heard it was the same car drivers going round and round the town, with music blaring and the windows down.

Burgh Inspector Peter McLennan admitted there were many occasions when the same people are involved, with the Myre and the Greens being a meeting place for 'boy racers' from Dundee, Arbroath and all around. The same group also visits Montrose.

He said: "There are measures we can take, and there is an operation in place to deal with them."

He intimated the Community Task Force, a group of officers who are tasked to go into certain areas, will be deployed in Forfar next month to deal with these issues, along with drugs.

Inspector McLennan stated detection rates for house break-ins in the area were quite high but warned of increases at this time of year due to the obviousness of houses being unoccupied.

He highlighted the free of charge service for the elderly, disabled and victims of crime who can have a meeting with a crime prevention officer.
