Public urged to be vigilant and report suspicious activity
MEMBERS of the public have been urged to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activities around local garages following reports of a number of thefts in the Forfar area.
Addressing this month’s meeting of Forfar Community Council, Sergeant John Sargeant of Tayside Police told members that the theft of metal, particularly copper and lead, from properties in Angus continues to be reported.
He said: “This is no doubt liked to the high value of scrap metals. Rural properties are the most commonly targeted premises.
“Also, the theft of fuel continues to be reported and again this is linked to the high price of the commodity.
“Please secure all property where appropriate, remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.”
In his report Sergeant Sargeant said that, despite being highlighted on numerous occasions, most housebreakings happen to insecure property.
He continued: “The same is true for theft of contents from motor vehicles.
“Thieves are opportunists; please don’t make it easy for them and secure all property.
“Bicycles can be security marked, at a cost of £5. Please speak to your local community officer.”
However, he was pleased to note that, during the first six months of 2012, there has been a significant reduction in vehicle crime reported in Angus.
He urged residents to make properties safe during dark nights by taking simple security measures including timers on internal lights and fitting external security lights.
