Police issue weather warnings
TAYSIDE Police advise that a very cold night, followed by widespread frost, sleet and snow in the early hours of tomorrow morning (Thursday, November 6) has been forecast for the region.
Motorists should be prepared for the possibility of significant disruption to travel or potentially difficult driving conditions, especially across Perthshire. They are reminded to drive with care and at an appropriate speed for the road and weather conditions.
The Met Office has issued an Amber warning overnight into tomorrow morning for the Tayside area and many other parts of Scotland. On high ground above 400 metres, 10 to 15 centimetres of snow is expected to fall, with five to 10 centimetres of snow predicted on ground above 200 metres. At lower levels, two or three centimetres of snow is forecast, before turning to rain during the morning. The conditions will remain cold, with patches of ice likely to form.
In icy conditions drivers should have the following information and advice in mind -
- Increase the gap between your vehicle and the one in front.
- On slippery roads it can take up to 10 times longer to stop.
- Reduce your speed and allow more time to slow down. Stop by decelerating earlier, rather than rely on braking alone.
- Drive with care even if you think the roads have been treated.
- If you are unable to hear any road noise then this could be a sign you are driving on ice
- Use dipped headlights so you can see and be seen.
- If visibility is extremely poor (less than 100 metres visibility) then use fog lights, but switch them off whenever conditions improve or they will cause undue dazzle, which is an offence.
- Take care on flooded roads. The deepest water is usually nearest the kerb, select first gear and move forward immediately to avoid stalling the engine, while maintaining high engine revs. Test your brakes after passing through the water.
- On flood affected roads, if you vehicle loses grip, or aquaplanes, take your foot off the accelerator to slow down.
- In addition, the following pieces of equipment should be considered during the winter months: ice Scraper and de-icer
A chamois or microfibre cloth - ideal for cleaning windows both internally and externally, additional supplies of windscreen washer fluid and water for the washers to top up during a journey, torch, a shovel (If it is likely to snow on your journey), warm clothes and a blanket, a pair of boots, airst aid kit, food and a warm drink in a flask during particularly cold weather.
