ANGUS schools that participated in the world record attempt for the most people signing and singing a song simultaneously are being urged to return their official witness statement forms.
Schoolchildren from the area look set to have broken the sign2sing Guinness World Record, organised by SignHealth on February 6, but not all participants have sent in the essential information.
Steve Powell, chief executive of SignHealth, the national healthcare charity for deaf people, said: “We need the witness statement forms along with photographic or video evidence to send to Guinness World Records™, so they can officially confirm we have broken the world record. It’s vital we have these or all the children’s hard work won’t count.
“We’re calling for all schools from Angus that took part to send in their paperwork to confirm they participated in the event. We believe more than 135,000 children took part in sign2sing but without the evidence we are unable to verify the actual number.
“The previous world record, which we set last year, was 114,277 so we are hoping to have smashed this. Our 2013 event was truly fantastic and we’re extremely grateful to everyone who took part.”
Schools need to send in their completed witness statement forms, video or photographic evidence and funds raised to SignHealth, 5, Baring Road, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 2NB by Friday, March 15, 2013.
Hundreds of schools from all over the country, including Angus, registered to take part in the Guinness World Record sign2sing project for the most people signing and singing at the same time.
Young people signed a song, entitled ‘sign2sing’, which was composed especially for the event.
The lyrics were written by Garry Slack, author of the award-winning ‘Sign with Olli’ books and the music was composed by Paul Fairey, who has written various theme tunes for television and radio.
sing2sing is a fund-raiser for SignHealth through a suggested £1 donation from everyone taking part. Children were asked to wear a scarf like Olli the monkey, who is SignHealth’s official mascot, to school on the day of sign2sing and take in their £1 donation.
The money will be used to continue the charity’s work helping to improve the mental and physical health and well-being of deaf people, including deaf children.
Damian Field from Guinness World Records said: “Over 135,000 pupils from schools around the world are expected to have taken part in the record attempt this year, which will break the record set last year of 114,277 people.
“This will be a fantastic achievement by SignHealth, which has organised and co-ordinated the event and of course all the pupils that participated. We look forward to receiving the evidence so that this can be officially recognised.”
The charity will be organising the event again next year (2014). People wishing to take part are invited to contact SignHealth to register their interest.
