PITSTOP MADE TO PRESENT AWARDS

A NUMBER of young people's efforts and achievements were recognised last week when The Pitstop Youth Café held a youth achievement award ceremony.

The youth achievement award scheme is certified by ASDAN - a national award body and the awards are recognized within schools and establishments of further education and employers.

The scheme encourages young people to get involved, while enhancing their personal and social skills, contributing to active citizenship.

The awards, which were presented by Ron Scrimgeour and Bill Middleton, are structured so that young people participate in a range of challenges from bronze - equivalent to a standard grade general, to platinum - equivalent to an advanced higher.

Participants of the scheme can progress on to different levels and they have been working on the youth achievement awards celebration, including preparing the buffet for the evening.

Those on the award scheme produced scrap books or portfolios of evidence highlighting the activities they have been involved in and also complete challenge booklets that requires them to record and review their challenges.

These are peer assessed by young people in their award group and the portfolios are examined by internal and external moderators to ensure there is continuity countrywide.

To date there are 12 young people registered, all of whom meet every Thursday at The Pitstop, and who have taken part in a number of activities such as raising funds for the Special Olympics, a residential to Dalguise and a cultural trip to Edinburgh.
