PARTY TIME FOR DIAMOND COUPLE
THERE was a party atmosphere at the St Margaret's Park home of Forfar couple Norman and Helen Black last Tuesday when they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
And the partying continued on Saturday (August 28) when the couple were joined by family and friends for a special celebration at the Letham Hotel.
Local councillors were joined by Depute Provost Mr Peter Murphy and Mrs Frances Duncan, depute Lieutenant of Angus, as well as well-wishers as the couple revealed that "just putting up with each other" and "give and take" was their secret to 60 years of married life.
Born on farms in different parts of Angus - Norman near Carnoustie and Helen north of Arbroath - their romance blossomed when Norman was working at Overbow and Helen, who lived at Netherbow, was working in service with the Hon. Nancy Arbuthnott at Cairnhill.
She caught Norman's eye as she was cycling home from work and he was working as a tractor-man in the fields.
The couple married at Kirriemuir Registrar's office on August 17, 1950.
They spent the first years of married life moving round various farms throughout Angus to accommodate Norman's job, starting at Mill of Inverarity where he was employed by Colin Syme, working latterly at Turwhappie.
They eventually moved into the town in 1970 before Norman decided to swap the tractor cab for the lorry cab, working initially with Scott of Claverhouse. For the last 29 years he has worked for C & G Brewster and still drives for the firm on a part-time basis.
The couple have two daughters - Linda and Helen - and a son Stewart, seven grand-children and 10 great grand-children.
Whilst raising their three children Helen waitressed in the town, firstly at the Queen's Hotel and latterly with Mr and Mrs Black at the Mart restaurant where she worked for over 30 years, retiring three years ago.
She also worked with the local authority at the County Buildings.
Whilst Helen enjoys going to the bingo, Norman is a keen fiddle player and travels to Glencarse once a month to attend the popular bothy nights.
He also attends Accordion and Fiddle Clubs in Montrose and Arbroath. The couple also enjoy gardening.
