PARKING USE FOR SITE OF FORMER KIRRIE PRIMARY

A DEVELOPMENT plan for the site of the burnt-down former Southmuir Primary School could help to alleviate parking and congestion issues in Prosen Road, Angus education committee heard last week.

A report before members outlined the plans, which include vehicular and pedestrian access from the Glamis Road, together with a tarmac area for staff car parking and a new grassed area for use by pupils.

The proposals will reduce the pressure to share the current grassed area at Webster's High School, officials explained in a report to committee.

"In addition, the area of ground outwith the school playground, which is mainly the old tarmac playground area of the former Southmuir Primary School, can, with minimal upgrade and cost, be used for additional parking, which will help to alleviate parking and congestion issues at Prosen Road for both schools.

"Vehicular access to the site will be strictly managed to also allow pedestrian traffic to access the school.

"The plan includes the demolition of the former janitor's house and Southmuir store. Both buildings are in very poor condition and are now beyond economic repair."

The plan is to undertake these works between May and July, which will ensure new arrangements can be implemented for the start of the new session in August.

Local councillor Ian Mackintosh hailed the development plan for the site as a positive one - stating that it safeguards ground on the Webster's/Southmuir campus should it be required for any future expansion.

The councillor had feared that, if the site had been deemed surplus to requirements, and sold off for housing, it would have left very little leeway for expansion, should that be required at the high school in the future.

He added that, meantime, making alternative parking provision for primary school staff would free up some of the space around the high school and sports centre.
