On top of the world after trek to Everest

FORMER Forfar lass Louise Laing took on the challenge of tackling Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth, last month for charity.

Louise (38), who now stays in Glasgow, decided to take part in the gruelling challenge to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland.

MS Society Scotland is a charity close to Laura’s heart as her sister, Denise Webster, was diagnosed with the disease two years ago.

The charity funds research, give grants, campaigns for change, provides information and support, invests in MS specialists and lends a listening ear to those who need it.

She took on the 17,598-foot trek to base camp at the beginning of January and completed the challenge 20 days later on January 24, braving harsh elements such as -35 degrees Celsius temperatures, no shower for the duration of the climb and enduring stodgy high energy food such as noodles and porridge everyday.

Louise was in a group with five other people as well as a guide and a sherpar to tackle Mount Everest which is located in the Himalayas in Asia. The Himalayas stretches across six countries; Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan.

She said: “We were living in tea rooms for the duration of the climb and enduring sub-zero temperatures and going without a wash but it was absolutely worth it. It was amazing!

“On the way back home it was a weird thought to think Scotland was actually warmer than where I had been.”

The thrill-seeker has already accomplished Mount Kilimanjaro, Ben Nevis and volcano running and insists that her next holiday should “probably be a hot place.”

Louise reached her target of raising £1,000 for MS Society Scotland via her Just Giving website which enables people to easily donate money online.

She has just gone over her target and currently has £1,031 and you can visit Louise’s fund raising page, sponsor her and see her current total at www.justgiving.com/louise-laing1.
