MURIEL HONOURED FOR HER WORK WITH THE DISABLED
A WELL-KNOWN Forfar woman, who has helped run the popular Monday Night Disabled Club for the last 35 years, was named a worthy recipient of the 2009 Andrew Smyth Memorial Award last Thursday evening.
Mrs Muriel Taylor was honoured at a presentation evening held by the Andrew Smyth Memorial Award Committee in the upper gallery in the Meffan.
It emerged she had originally gone along to the club - the first to meet in the new Lochside Leisure Centre - as company for a disabled relative, and she has been there ever since!
For years Muriel helped out at the club alongside Mrs Bunty Nicoll, herself a recipient of the Andrew Smyth Memorial Award, and "fell heir" to the job when Bunty stepped down.
The club is still going strong and can have anything from 20 to 28 members attending on Monday evenings.
They enjoy a full range of activities from carpet bowls and badminton to bingo, dominoes and table tennis.
As a helper at the club Muriel also took part in three trips abroad with club members - to Vienna in the 1980's during the Year of the Disabled, to Yugoslavia and to Tenerife.
Muriel attended the presentation evening with her two sons, their respective wife and partner, and her three grand-children.
Mrs Isobel Ross, who as chairman of Forfar Community Council is chairman of the Andrew Smyth Memorial Committee, described Mrs Taylor as a "very worthy winner".
Helen Blacklaws gave a presentation on the dedicated service Muriel had given over the years to the Monday Night Disabled Club, before Mr Neil Smyth, great-nephew of Andrew Smyth, presented the engraved rosebowl as the 28th Memorial Award.
Among the company who attended the reception were Forfar's four councillors as well as Malcolm Raitt and Kim and Alison Ogilvie of the disabled club, and other helpers.
Muriel thanked all those who have helped with the running of the club over the years before Mr Bill McLeod proposed a vote of thanks.
Music for the evening was provided by Sandy Ingram and Alan Morrison.
