MEMORIAL BENCH DEDICATED TO JAN

LOCAL jockey Jan Wilson - the 19-year-old who was killed in a fire in North Yorkshire last September - was fondly remembered by family and friends on Sunday.

Jan's parents, Drew and Margaret, marked the first anniversary of their tragic loss by dedicating a memorial bench to their daughter in the grounds of Rescobie Church, which is across the loch from Greenhead Farm where the aspiring jockey grew up.

It was back in September 5 last year that Jan, and fellow apprentice Jamie Kyle from County Galway in Ireland, lost their lives in the fire incident at a block of flats in Norton, not far from Malton in North Yorkshire.

Mr Wilson said the memorial bench was a nice way to remember Jan who "didn't have a bad bone in her body."

Later this month, on September 23, 37-year-old Peter Brown, the man convicted of the manslaughter of Jan and Jamie, following a 19-day-trial at Leeds Crown Court, will be sentenced for his crime.
