Baton of Honour

Baton of Honour

A FORFAR woman has been presented with the prestigious Baton of Honour, the last one to be handed out before all police forces join together in April.

Rachel Hanton (23) received the award, which is presented to the most outstanding student on the probationer training programme, during the passing out parade on Friday, March 8.

The Baton of Honour and Scottish Police Federation trophy is the highest award available to a police officer at the Scottish Police College which is in Tulliallan.

The award was first given out in 1954 and the baton is presented to students who, throughout their training display leadership, personality, strength of character and a high degree of professional and academic ability.

The student is awarded the baton at the passing out parade by the senior inspecting officer, and their name is inscribed upon a board within the college and stands as a roll of honour.

Approximately one percent of students who attend the college are awarded with the Baton of Honour.

The former Forfar Academy pupil is “extremely proud and honoured to be given the baton,” as she felt that being awarded it, she was able to represent Tayside Police for a final time.

As of April 1, there will no longer be eight forces as Central Scotland Police, Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, Fife Constabulary, Grampian Police, Lothian and Borders Police, Northern Constabulary, Strathclyde Police and Tayside Police will all join together to become one Scottish force.

As a result of this, the baton will no longer be awarded to a specific force such as Tayside.

Rachel is “extremely over the moon” to be the last officer to bring the baton to Tayside and it was an emotional day for all who attended the passing out parade.
