JANIE'S TRIP OF A LIFETIME BECKONS
A KIRRIEMUIR teenager has been given a financial boost for her efforts to "help save our seas" as she prepares for a trip of a lifetime to Madagascar.
Janie Morton was presented with two cheques last Thursday at Kookaburras Restaurant which will go towards a six month placement she has secured with Reef Doctor - a marine conservation organisation conducting coral reef research and development work with local fishing communities of Madagascar.
The former pupil of Forfar Academy is now studying at Salford University.
As part of her degree in Wildlife Conservation and Zoo Biology she has to complete a year's work experience.
She said: "I have been extremely lucky to be given a six-month placement in Madagascar with a non-profit organisation, Reef Doctor, as a science intern.
"I will be part of a team conducting coral reef researching, conservation and awareness.
"Coral is the foundation of any reef system, providing food and a structured habitat for many marine organisms.
"As well as giving me an opportunity to experience Madagascar, its people and its culture, it will enable me to help with marine conservation and sustainable community development.
"I will also be helping protect the sea turtles in hatcheries as their numbers are in serious decline across Madagascar."
Janie has received sponsorship from a number of local businesses and was delighted last Thursday when she received a cheque for 200 from Forfar Academy, and for 100 from Glencoul Fabrics.
She has also received donations from Alan Davie & Son, A.M. Phillips, Colin M Smith, Kookaburras, as well as family and friends.
She has also held a number of fund-raisers including a car boot sale which have all helped her in her attempt to raise 5,000 for the trip.
She has been working in the holidays at Glamis Castle and Kookaburras restaurant.
Janie has been interested in wildlife and the environment for a number of years and has participated in a wide range of voluntary work at the SSPCA Centre at Petterden, at the Thrums Veterinary Group and further afield where she has helped to rescue turtles in Costa Rica.
She is a member of the WWF, SSPCA and Animal Defenders.
Janie, who has just finished her second year at Salford University, will head off for her trip of a lifetime on July 31.
