Green light for Kirriemuir supermarket plan
ANGUS Council has paved the way for a new supermarket on the outskirts of Kirriemuir.
At a packed meeting staged in Kirriemuir Town Hall on Wednesday evening (tonight) councillors voted by a thumping 18-5 majority to go against the officers’ recommendation of refusal and support the application put forward by Guild Homes (Tayside).
The three-hour meeting ended at around 9 pm, with the decision being met with loud applause and cheers from the gallery.
The Guild Homes application for the Pathhead site - which involves the demolition of Newton Cottage and the erection a supermarket with associated car parking, landscaping and improved road layout, including access to employment land to the south of the site - went before councillors with a recommendation of refusal, officers of the opinion that the proposed development was significantly contrary to the provisions of the development plan.
The outcome of the meeting is that Kirriemuir now has two sites approved for development as supermarkets - the other at the Gairie Works, which was given the green light on appeal to the Scottish Government, having been initially turned down by the local authority.
It was evident from the outset of Wednesday’s meeting that the Guild Homes application had strong public support.
Of the 1208 individual letters of representation - 1132 of them were in favour of the supermarket plan and just 76 against.
Representatives of Kirriemuir Community Council and Kirriemuir Ladward East also gave full backing for the Pathhead site plans.
And, following a lengthy debate the councillors supported an amendment to the motion of refusal by a very wide margin.
The proposal will now be referred back to appropriate council committees for appropriate conditions to be attached.
