A BENCH to commemorate one of Forfar’s best loved dogs has been put in place at the Carseview Road crossroads.

Giggsy, which was owned by Forfar Athletic groundsman Martin Gray, sadly died earlier this year.

After passing away in September floods of tributes were made to Giggsy with many calling for some kind of lasting memorial for “Forfar’s Greyfriar’s Bobby.”

As she was so well known and loved by many in the town the decision was made to place a bench in her honour.

The crossroads at Carseview was chosen as this was Giggsy’s spot to stop and see where she and Martin were going to go after leaving Station Park for the day - home or to The Plough Inn.

Almost £500 was raised by the people of Forfar to make the bench a reality.

A collection was held outside Station Park before the derby fixture against Brechin City in mid-September with £265 raised.

In addition to this £85 was raised with a collection at The Plough Inn.

Martin also said that a donation of £50 came from a “loyal Forfar fan”.

The bench is decorated with a plaque bearing a poem composed by Arthur Smith in dedication to Giggsy.

“I passed this spot from young to old,

“In the hot and freezing cold,

“Seeing well kent faces and those unknown,

“Heading to the ground I called my own,

“Fond memories of then to now,

“Let’s have a swifty at The Plough.”

The plaque also bears the inscription: “In loving memory of Giggsy Gray. Thanks to all kind donations from the Forfar public and all who knew her.”

Martin said that he is staggered by the enthusiastic response he received from those who wished to donate for the bench.

He also expressed warm thanks to all who gave something for the fund including the travelling Brechin fans who donated at the derby game in September.
