Generous donation helps keep community bus on road

THE FORFARIAN Community Bus Trust was given a welcome boost this week when they were presented with a cheque for £500.
The cash was handed over during their weekly run to the Physically Disabled United Group at Forfar Academy’s Community Wing.
The cash will be used to keep the popular bus on the road, providing much needed transport for a variety of clubs and organisations.
On hand to accept the cheque was co-ordinator Jim Myles, who expressed his appreciation for the donation which will help meet running and maintenance costs of this the fourth ‘Forfarian’.
The distinctive vehicle can be seen out and about, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, manned by a dedicated team of volunteer drivers.
However, Jim used the occasion to dispel some myths about who can and cannot use the bus, and to appeal for more volunteer drivers.
He said: “There has been a ‘Forfarian’ bus on the road for more than 30 years. Any group or organisation is welcome to use the bus.
“We offer a door-to-door service but it’s not a taxi service. We cover Forfar, Kirriemuir and Glamis and cater for groups from Brownies and Scouts to the elderly - in fact any group in the local community, not just disabled groups. We’re not here to make a profit but to cover our running expenses and repairs.”
Currently the bus is used to take members to church services, for outings for residents in sheltered housing complexes, both local and further afield. Members of local day care centres, when their own buses are unavailable, and groups, whose members use the bus to get to regular meetings, benefit from the service. The current bus is now over five years old and the Bus Trust is looking to replace it next year.
