ANGUS Councillors brought one of Kirriemuir’s most famous tourist attractions into focus on Thursday when they agreed a grant award of £20,000 to the National Trust for Scotland for the running of the camera obscura.

As one of only three in Scotland, the camera obscura is housed in the cricket pavilion gifted to the town by Sir J. M. Barrie. It gives panoramic views over the town towards the Sidlaws and up into the Angus glens.

Members of the council’s neighbourhood services committee agreed the request for funding from the council’s survive and thrive cultural heritage award scheme.

The scheme supports groups registered as charities which run visitor attractions in Angus and support volunteering from within their communities.

A fund of £200,000 was set up to provide financial assistance for projects covering the three years from 2012 to 2015 which will improve the viability, sustainability and quality of visitor experience of community based visitor attractions.

The National Trust for Scotland explained the funding would ensure continuity and development of visitor facilities at the Barrie Pavilion, complementing the new ‘Heritage and Nature Trail’ and Neverland play area while maintaining current high standards and quality of experience for visitors to the camera obscura.
