Former Forfarian George celebrates turning 100
George Brodlie celebrated turning 100 on Thursday.
A FORMER Forfarian, celebrated turning 100 on Thursday with a lunch party at the New Club in Edinburgh.
George Brodlie was born in Forfar in 1913 and the family business was the Forfar Rope Works of George Brodlie and Sons.
The Ropey moved to Chapel Street in the year George was born, and the family went on to live there for many years.
George’s father became president of Forfar Bowling Club in 1932 .
His mother, Lizzie Brodlie, was a stalwart of the Woman’s Guild at St John’s Episcopal Church.
And his cousin James was a notable amateur golfer, playing twice in The Open.
George was educated at Forfar Academy and in 1930 he was the first dux of the school. The school gave him a love of writing which he realised through a long career in journalism, contributing articles to the Forfar Dispatch whilst at school and later as a reporter at the Aberdeen Press and Journal before and after the war, and from 1952 at The Scotsman in Edinburgh where he became Financial Editor before retiring in 1978.
After retirement he continued to write weekly articles on investment for The Scotsman.
Although he moved to Aberdeen with his wife Anna in 1948, and to Edinburgh in 1952, he kept a keen interest in Forfar.
George graduated with an MA honours degree in English from Edinburgh University in 1935, and his family have continued the academic tradition that George set. His son, Kenneth, born in Forfar in 1947, and his grandson Malcolm, both followed in George’s footsteps to achieve honours degrees at Edinburgh University. Younger grandson Alastair gained an MSc at Bath University and all three went on to gain PhDs.
Although not as mobile as he once was, George is still in good shape and can easily recite the full Forfar Athletic team of the late 1920s!
