FITNESS FANATICS TO "ATTACK" BEN NEVIS
A NUMBER of fitness fanatics from the Kirriemuir area will be busy over the next few months preparing for a challenge to climb the highest mountain in Britain to raise money for local charities.
Theatre staff nurse Heather Kelly will be joined by classmates of Abs Attack, one of the Active Fit classes run by Webster's Sports Centre, after setting the challenge of climbing Ben Nevis in June to raise money for Kirriemuir Day Care and Lippen Care. Originally planned for September last year, Heather had to postpone the climb to recover from a major operation.
Readers may recall Heather's incredible transformation which featured in the Dispatch and Herald in May, having reduced her dress size from size 30 to size 12 and, as a result, cured her diabetes.
Heather regularly attends classes at the sports centre, including circuit training, takes regular walks around her hometown of Kirriemuir and hopes to tackle the Loch Brandy route as part of her training for Ben Nevis. Heather said: "I do a lot of walking but not up mountains! I don't expect to go flying up Ben Nevis - I expect a hard slog.
"We all attend a number of classes at Webster's and the majority of us are in reasonable fitness. We will not be fast but then it's not about that. I like a challenge.
"I will be undergoing more surgery before the climb in June but that won't stop me walking! The majority of us taking part are raising money for Kirriemuir Day Care and Lippen Care as most of our families have used these services before."
Heather's mother was cared for at Strathmore Hospice in the time before her death in July 2008. She said: "Mum spent two weeks at Strathmore Hospice and felt more at ease, relaxed and safer there. She was happier there and it was the best place for her at that time.
"I couldn't fault the service, it was absolutely amazing. And I could go in whenever I wanted and stay as long as I wanted.
"I am now a volunteer at Kirriemuir Day Care and visit whenever I can which is usually a Thursday. I help out with cuppas and activities and really enjoy going up to visit.
"We have already started raising money for these charities and had a raffle at Christmas time which raised 150. I do a lot of baking too and my husband's work, Artisan Rooftech Ltd, has been great."
