FIONA'S CHARITY SHOP FOR MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT

A GLAMIS woman who is in training for a 250-mile cycle run in India later this year is running a charity shop in Forfar this week.

Fiona Young (41) will be peddling a wide variety of goods in the former Castelles launderette in Castle Street as she prepares to pedal her way through India in November.

The shop is part of her 1100 fund-raising drive for the trip which will raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

A keen cyclist, Fiona has agreed to get into the saddle in November for a gruelling 250 mile trip.

Starting at the Taj Mahal at Agra, the five day cycle run takes the cyclists along the Deli trail, finishing in Pushkar.

Fiona, a care worker who works in a home for the elderly in Meigle, explained: "I have never done anything like this before, although I have always wanted to.

"My depute manager at work did a similar trip in China in 2000 and she told me about the India trip.

"I am a keen cyclist and cycle to my work. I am now in training and last weekend did a 60 mile run up to Dunkeld and back.

"The trip in India is over five days and the longest day we have is 60 miles. It will be 30 degrees with humidity which will get me.

"We finish at Pushkar on the day of the world famous camel fair, so who knows, they might get three camels for me!"

Fiona is now busy with her training as well as fund-raising for her trip.

As well as running the charity shop she has done a couple of car boot sales and has organised a bingo tea which will be held in the British Legion in Forfar on September 19.

She is driven in her effort to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support, after losing her mum seven years ago to cancer.

She added: "We didn't have the use of Macmillan nurses. I quite often think Cancer Research gets a lot of support, but lots of people forget the families need support too."

The charity shop is open through to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone with any items which will help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support is asked to hand them into the shop during opening hours, where they will be gratefully received.
