Forfar Inner Wheel’s first speaker of 2013 was Helen Fleming.

Helen gave the ladies of the club a fascinating insight into the setting up and operation of the charity Mary’s Meals.

The Scottish charity was born out of the Bosnian War when two fish farmers from Dalmally took jeep convoys of aid out to Bosnia. They were also involved in relief work in Romania and the drought in Malawi.

It was there that they met a family whose mother was dying of Aids and all her children wanted was enough to eat and to go to school every day. This is when the very simple idea behind Mary’s Meals was born, to provide one meal a day in a place of education. The charity provides the meal but the scheme is run by local volunteers. Currently Mary’s Meals is providing 740,000 children worldwide with a daily meal. All sorts of organisations and celebrities have become supporters of this charity including Duncan Bannatyne and Martha Payne whose blog on school dinners raised £135,000 for the charity.

To celebrate Inner Wheel Day, members had entertained the residents of Springfield. A delicious afternoon tea was served and entertainment was provided by a group of four very talented locals ladies called Paragem. The club’s annual coffee morning will be held at the Guide Centre on Saturday, February 16, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon.
