ERIC'S VINTAGE TRIP CROSSED WITH SILVER
VINTAGE vehicle enthusiast Eric Bowman was in celebratory mood on his return journey home from Thirlestane Castle in the Borders recently after picking up his highest accolade to date for his hobby of restoring vintage vehicles.
Eric, or Hillend of Lownie, currently owns three vintage vehicles - two Austins and a Lanchester 10.
He and his wife Vina travel to vintage vehicle events from Fraserburgh to Selkirk, but it was their trip to Thirlestane Castle two weekends ago to compete in the Historic Motoring Extravaganza organised by the Borders Vintage Automobile Club which proved memorable.
Eric had entered his 1934 Austin 12 saloon in class 3 - post vintage 31 to 39 years - and was delighted when it won.
However, he was overjoyed when it went on to win the Champion of Champions' award, and the trophy that went with it.
"This is the highest accolade I have won so I can retire now," Eric joked.
Eric, who is a regular at the Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club's Glamis Extravaganza and who competed at the Angus Show last weekend, has spent the last three years restoring his vehicles.
A motor engineer to trade, he served his time with Castle Motors before working with Ron Wilson.
