END OF THE ROAD FOR PROMINENT FORFAR CHURCH?

FORFAR was dropped a bombshell on Friday afternoon with the news that the most prominent church building in town - the East & Old Parish - is to close its doors.

It was confirmed by the Church of Scotland that, following arbitration, St. Margaret's Church has been chosen as the preferred site to house a new unified congregation.

Both the East & Old and St. Margaret's Churches had already agreed a basis of union after many months of talks, but one of the main stumbling blocks was which building would be retained and which would close.

That decision has now been made by Church of Scotland arbiters, who were in town last Thursday to meet officials of both congregations and carry out an inspection of both church buildings.

Letters were sent to representatives of both churches earlier this week - and popped through the letter-boxes today (Friday).
