Ditch the cigarettes

DAVID Martin, Scotland’s senior MEP, is encouraging smokers in Scotland to ‘swap fags for swag’ by quitting the habit.

Mr Martin is supporting the British Heart Foundation’s annual health campaign, which shows how smokers could treat themselves to all sorts of ‘swag’. If they quit for a day they could save £7, or for a week saving £49, which would mean £210 a month and £2,555 saved when they have quit for a year.

David said: “Stopping smoking is not just one of the best things you can do to boost your health but it’s great for your bank balance as well. Quitting can be difficult, but there is a great deal of local support available and working out what you could afford to buy is a great motivator.

“I’d encourage everyone in Scotland to give it a go and join thousands of others trying to quit on the day.”

Labour MEPs are leading the Tobacco Products Directive currently going through the European Union. Their aims include restricting additives and flavourings and standardising packaging to remove all branding.

Nearly one in five adults in the UK smoke, but figures show that around two thirds of them want to quit.

The campaign is now in its 30th year has helped more than 760,000 people to quit smoking in 2012.
