FORFAR’S first Asian family arrived as the first of four Ugandan refugee families who will be settling in Forfar.

Mr and Mrs Kalyanj and their four children, who have been living in a refugee camp in Devon since they left Uganda, are to start their new life in Jeanfield Crescent where a house is being prepared for them by the Town Council and the Angus Social Work Department.

Mr Kalyanj was a textile merchant and his son was a watchmaker. The other three children all speak fluent English and are of school age.

Two of the children will attend Forfar Academy and the third will be at the West School.

A meal of Indian food will be prepared for the family by Mrs S. S. Mann.

FEARS that Forfar could become a dormant town in years to come were expressed at Forfar Community Council’s monthly meeting last week.

Vice chairman Mr Doug Nicol told members that following the closures in the past 24 months of the BRS depot, the rail link, the Tartan Factory, K-Freeze, Low and Duff, Elbar-Agricar, Victoria Works and Craiks comes the news that the Department of Health and Social Security’s Forfar office is to close early in the new year.

Mr Nicol commented on the situation: “This all ties in with the possible erosion of maternity facilities in the town.”

A FORFAR man is hot on the trail of a prestigious gun dog title. The British Field Trial Springer Spaniel Championship is being hunted down by Bob Black.

The 44-year-old will compete in the national event with his dog Bomakama Breeze.

The event will take place in Norfolk early next year and boasts the top dogs from Britain.

Bob staked his place in the finals after winning an open qualifying stake and victory at the Borders in August gave Breeze field trial championship status.

Bob qualified for the British Championships and said: “Field trial is the real McCoy. It’s considered the cream of the gun dog world.”
