DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN FORFAR BUSINESS-MAN

THE funeral took place last Friday (August 13) of well-known Forfar business-man James (Jimmy) Doig.

The third generation of auctioneers, he died peacefully at Finavon Court Nursing Home at the age of 83.

Born in Castle Street, he was educated at the North School and, like his father James, joined Thomas Doig & Son which was established by his grand-father in 1888.

The furniture sale room and auctioneers originally operated out of premises opposite the Reid Hall. It later moved to the High Street before relocating to Little Causeway.

Working along-side his father, Jimmy eventually took over the reins and was joined by his wife Elma, whom he married in 1949, and latterly his son Kenneth and daughter Pamela who now run the business.

Jimmy also ran the popular furniture auctioneers room in Chapel Street for many years where he was in his element at the fortnightly sales.

He retired from the business around 10 years ago although he was a frequent visitor to the Little Causeway premises.

Jimmy was a keen golfer in his younger years and was a member of Forfar Golf Club. He was also a past member of Forfar Round Table, the 41 Club and Forfar Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife Elma, son Kenneth, daughter Pamela and four grand-children.
