Curling talk delights club

Guest speaker at Kirriemuir Probus Club’s latest meeting was Cameron McKiddie, who required little introduction to the members.

A retired optometrist, Cameron has many interests and hobbies including curling, having been a member of Kirriemuir Curling Club for most of his life. His talk described how an idea to produce a small booklet to commemorate the Club’s Bicentenary year in 2009 grew into the publication of the book ‘Celebrating Curling – the Roarin’ Game’.

Cameron explained that the club had been fund-raising for many years prior to 2009, to ensure that the Bicentenary be celebrated in style. Funds were raised through a casino night and sales of daffodil bulbs and photo greetings cards at Farmers’ Markets. The funds raised allowed publication of 1000 copies of the book.

Years of research unearthed a treasure trove of articles, stories, poems and photographs gleaned from old club minutes and local newspaper reports.

Cameron’s highlight was an interview with the club’s oldest surviving past member at the time, Wallace Neilson, then 91, resulting in a fascinating historical account of life and curling in Kirrie.

Cameron said the book has boosted Kirriemuir Curling Club’s finances, with proceeds intended to be used to promote curling, in particular for junior players if possible.

A vote of thanks was proposed by Jim McIntosh.

The next meeting of Kirriemuir Probus Club is on Wednesday. February 15 when various club members will talk on ‘National Service – Fond Memories’.
