Citizens ‘very satisfied’ with life in the county

The most recent Angus citizen survey reveals that 99% of respondents are very satisfied or satisfied with the quality of life in the county.

The survey of 1500 people from across the county was the second commissioned by Angus Council to gauge residents’ views about their local communities and the broad range of services provided by the council, the NHS, police and fire services.

Chair of the Angus Community Planning Partnership, council leader Bob Myles said the findings were overwhelmingly positive.

“Residents clearly enjoy living in Angus and are happy with the services they receive.

“The findings offer an extremely positive picture of life here and it is particularly gratifying to see that residents’ satisfaction has improved significantly since the 2009 survey.”

Councillor Myles said the findings from the previous survey had helped inform the development of the services of the council and its community planning partners.

“This recent survey shows a marked improvement in people’s satisfaction with local services and facilities,” said councillor Myles.

“There are still some areas where residents are less satisfied so there is no room for complacency.

“However, the findings show that people acknowledge that improvements have been made.

“For example, respondents believe the facilities for young people can still be improved on but their satisfaction with what is now being offered has increased by 29%.

“Similarly there has been a 29% increase in satisfaction with the condition of roads, pavements and street lighting.”

Some of the key findings to emerge from the survey are: 99% of respondents stated they are either very satisfied or satisfied with the quality of life in Angus (93% in 2009); just 4% believe their neighbourhood has worsened in the last five years (29% in 2009); 96% stated that they believed services in their local area are affordable (87% in 2009); 34% believe that people can have either great or some influence in their community (13% in 2009); 85% perceive their overall health to be either very good or good (69% in 2009); only 18% of respondents stated they smoked (36% in 2009).

With specific regard to council services, responses indicate that the council is performing best where it is most important to residents, most specifically the provision of a good range of good quality services: 89% of respondents believe that the council offers a good range of services (72% in 2009); 81% believe that the council provides good quality services (64% in 2009); 81% believe that the council has friendly, polite and helpful employees (70% in 2009); 79% stated that the council provides an efficient service (64% in 2009); 73% stated that the council provides services which are value for money (55% in 2009); 53% are satisfied with the council’s response to complaints (44% in 2009); fewer people think the council has the resources to do a good job – 55% compared to 63% in 2009 The survey findings were being discussed at Tuesday’s Strategic Policy Committee and will also be discussed at the next meeting of the Angus Community Planning Partnership.
