CALL TO PAVE OVER MYRE FOOTBALL PITCH

THE Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Angus wants to see the Myre football pitch paved over to make way for cars.

Sanjay Samani thinks Forfar's town centre should be shaken up to make it more accessible for visitors and believes an expanded Myre car park should be one of the top priorities.

His proposal would come at the expense of one of the town's half dozen football pitches though, which is also popular with dog walkers and used as a staging area for various events including gala days and touring fairgrounds. Mr Samani doesn't think it would need replaced.

The comments came after the Lib Dem candidate toured the town with Avril Simpson from Forfar Community Council and local councillor, Colin Brown.

He said: "Every time I come to Forfar and try and park at the Myre Car Park I have had very considerable problems as it has almost always been completely full.

"I know other there are other car parks I can try, however, for visitors to the town this can cause real problems.

"Local residents and town centre businesses have suggested to me that an expansion of the car park at the Myre would be a considerable advantage.

"Basically, the car park could be expanded into where the football pitch is at the moment.

"I've been around the town with Colin Brown, looking at the football pitches. There's plenty already and the Myre one is not that well used.

"This is about improving the situation for Forfar and to get more business into the town centre to help local shops."

Mr Samani also wants to see a one-way system fully implemented in Castle Street, a move he says will improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow.

Having talked to a number of businesses at The Cross, he feels such a move would be supported by local traders.

He said: "My instinct is that there should be a one way system at The Cross. We are always looking for people's opinions.

"I've spoken to the shops around The Cross and pretty much all of them said they would be happy with a one way system.

"They said that, when the one way system was there during the roadworks, it either didn't affect them or was positive for their business."

Mr Samani said he was hoping to survey locals on the proposals over the course of the next few weeks.
