CALL FOR FORFAR COUNCILLORS TO 'WALK THE WARD'
A former Forfar councillor, who raised concerns about the state of the town's pavements during the recent cold spell with members of Forfar Community Council, has called on Angus Councillors to "walk the ward" to assess damage done during the cold spell.
Mr Ron Scrimgeour, who is treasurer of Age Concern Argus, has stated some of the footpaths, pavements and walkways have suffered badly during the two week sub zero weather and the flooding before and afterwards.
He said the block pavements have been a real success in improving the appearance in the town centre, but many of the blocks are now uneven and need urgent attention.
He said: "The tarmac and looser compound pavements have suffered as well and I think a community initiative to report the worst affected areas should be launched.
"I would encourage all our councillors to "walk the ward" and report back the worst affected areas as a matter of urgency. Get fit and do a bit of community service – a win win situation!
"The areas around our schools and sheltered housing need particular attention with young children and elderly people being particularly at risk."
Mr Scrimgeour encouraged the public to report areas of concern via Angus Council Access line.
He continued: "I also think the council should alert all council offices to receive notes of badly affected areas – libraries, rent offices, social work offices and schools. It is usually when people go about their normal business that they see things needing attention, but when they get back home they forget.
"The council should also use the technology of the day and give a text number for reporting everyday maintenance in the community. I am sure that would increase the reporting of street lights that are out, road signs needing cleaned and more.
"It seems that money is likely to be a problem but given the impact unrepaired pavements has on so many people, tourist enjoyment of our burghs and the economy of the shopping areas, a case could be made for using council reserves in meeting any shortfall in funding."
