Long service award

Stracathro charge nurse Ken Shaw received his long service award to commemorate his 40 years of working for the NHS at a presentation at Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre in Forfar.

Ken, who lives in Brechin, started working as an auxiliary nurse at Liff Hospital in Dundee in 1972 and within a few weeks he was asked if he would be interested in undertaking nurse training at Ninewells School of Nursing.

He was accepted for his nursing studies and completed the Registered General Nurse (RGN) training in 1975 and began working in ward 7 at Ninewells Hospital.

The following year, to further develop his nurse training, he completed the Registered Mental Nurse (RMN) course. He returned to work at Liff Hospital working in various wards as a staff nurse until 1980 when he moved to Aberdeen to take up a nursing post at the Royal Cornhill Hospital.

In 1989, after spending nine years working in Aberdeen, his nursing career brought him back to Tayside to work in theatres at Stracathro Hospital. Ken became a charge nurse in 1992.

Susan Wilson, general manager, Angus Community Health Partnership, presented Ken with his award and said: “It is with great pleasure that I present Ken with his long service award in recognition of his 40 years service with the NHS.”
