Aspberger awareness

A FORFAR parent is raising awareness of Asperger’s syndrome after his son was diagnosed just before Christmas.

James McClusky and his wife, Arlene, found out that their seven-year-old son had the autism spectrum disorder Asperger’s syndrome and decided to start raising awareness about the condition to help the general public understand and accept the condition.

Asperger’s syndrome, also known as Asperger’s disorder, is a type of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). PDDs are a group of conditions that involve delays in the development of many basic skills, most notably the ability to socialise with others, to communicate and to use imagination.

Mr McClusky has many fund-raising ideas such as sky-diving later on this year in order to raise money for Aspberger’s Awareness and Parent to Parent which help families in the same situation.

Mr McClusky said: “After our son was diagnosed we weren’t sure what to do. With the help of support groups we have managed to cope and we just want to give something back and say thank you. Aspberger’s syndrome is a very complicated syndrome and can affect people in many different ways.”

Mr McClusky described the situation after the diagnosis of Asperger’s as “a relief.”
