ASDA UNVEILS FORFAR STORE PLANS

ASDA, the UK's lowest priced supermarket, is about to submit a full planning application to Angus Council to build a new store on a site which borders St James Road and New Road in Forfar (Forfar Dispatch August 19, 2010).

ASDA has been shaping its proposals over the past few months by consulting with the local community on its plans for the site of the former Don & Low factory and Angus Council's headquarters - and has acted on their comments.

ASDA held a successful public exhibition in the town over two days in June and received over 360 responses to its proposals.

As a result of the issues raised at the events and its discussions with Angus Council, ASDA has made a number of changes to its plans which will create up to 270 full and part time jobs in the area.

The design of the building has been altered to include more natural stone from the existing factory to preserve more of the heritage of the site and ensure it fits with its surroundings, and other sustainably sourced materials will also be used in the construction of the store.

An additional footpath is also being added from New Road to the car park as a means of bridging the gap between the car park and the footpath provision on New Road.

A full transport assessment will be submitted with the application, which will be lodged shortly, outlining the traffic proposals for the site following discussions with Angus Council.

ASDA has also just launched a new website which will provide updates on the store proposals and offer the community further opportunities to provide feedback on the proposals.

It hopes this new tool will allow residents to fully engage with ASDA and create a store that will bring benefits to the whole community and fit in with the local townscape. The website can be found at www.asdaforfar.co.uk

Lisa Rooke, property communications manager for Scotland said: "We are extremely excited about our plans for Forfar and would like to thank all the people who have provided their feedback on our plans.

"We believe our proposals can bring significant investment to the area along with ASDA's famous low prices.

"Through engagement with the local community over the last few months, we have refined our proposals. ASDA takes pride in listening to the feedback of residents and we have amended our plans where possible to reflect those views.

"We hope the new website will allow us to engage with an even wider section of the community and keep residents updated about key developments in our proposals.

"We look forward to continuing to work with Angus Council and the local community as our plans progress."

The proposed new store has a sales area of 28,000 sq ft and a gross store area of approximately 50,000 sq ft.

There will be an in-store caf and an element of housing is also being proposed as part of the development.
