The Forfar area is set to gain its biggest housing development in almost 20 years following planning approval.
Guild Homes have had their application for a 209-house development at Wester Restenneth approved by the Angus development standards committee.
It is hoped that the £40 million scheme will prove to be a boost for both the town and the local economy.
The first homes should be ready for their new owners in less than a year.
Planning permission was first sought for the site back in 2002 and a number of proposals have been rejected over the years.
Subject to a number of conditions approval has now been granted for the 17-hectare area which lies between the Old Brechin Road and the Montrose Road.
Angus Council previously zoned the area for around 250 homes and then later approved 220 dwellings.
Following further discussions between the developers and the local authority this number has been reduced to 209.
By reducing the number of units it is hoped this will allay any concerns.
Mark Guild, company director, said: “This is the largest detailed housing application for Forfar for 18 years.
“The success of this proposal has far-reaching consequences not just for our company and employees but also the provision of housing in Forfar.”
Mr Guild confirmed that the company plan to start work at the beginning of 2012 and the first units should be complete by the summer.
