AS part of local fund-raising efforts currently underway to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, a Relay for Life fund-raising disco is being held in Kirriemuir Town Hall on Saturday, May 21.
The disco is being organised by Kirriemuir Relay for Life Committee and volunteer committee member, Iain Gray, explained that the event has at least two aims.
“We hope to raise enough money to pay for some of the vital equipment we need to hire to ensure the 2011 Kirriemuir Relay for Life goes as smoothly as possible, such as lighting, generators and, of course, decent toilets.
“Ideally, we want every penny raised by the teams to be used for Cancer Research UK’s ground-breaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer so hopefully we’ll be able to raise enough to cover our expenses.
“However, the disco is also a great excuse for a night out,” continued Iain.
“As long as they have a ticket everyone in the Kirriemuir area over the age of 18 is welcome, regardless of whether or not they’re a member of one of the teams in this year’s Relay for Life.”
Tickets to the disco cost £10 each, which includes a light supper.
The evening starts at 7.30 pm and will feature a raffle and an auction, where wonderful goodies donated by local businesses will go to the highest bidder, including a stunning painting by local artist Jack MacDonald, rounds of golf on some of Scotland’s most highly-rated golf courses and hospitality tickets to a top football match.
“The Relay for Life is about raising funds for Cancer Research UK and raising awareness about cancer but the committee members are also very aware that it’s also about spending time with other people from the local community and having fun – which also sums up perfectly what our disco is all about,” added Iain.
“We hope as many people as possible join us in the Town Hall on the evening of May 21.”
Over thirty teams have now entered Kirriemuir Relay for Life 2011, which is taking place over the weekend of August 13/14 at Kirriemuir Show Ground, East Muirhead of Logie, Kirriemuir.
“The Relay for Life is still four months away so it’s great to have so many teams already signed up,” said Iain.
“However, as we’re holding the Relay for Life in a new, much more spacious, location this year, there’s still room for lots more teams.”
