Proposals to relocate Kirriemuir’s Post Office have raised questions among the public regarding how they will be able to access services.

News of the planned move to Thistle News and Gifts was discussed at Kirriemuir Community Council’s recent meeting and secretary Cathy Stephenson this week said she has been approached by members of the public keen to find out details.

She said: “People are wanting to know things like where there will be Post Offices in Kirriemuir, things that worry people about how they access services, and I’m trying to get answers from the Post Office.

“One of the questions is, why isn’t it moving to the Co-op? But it was an open application process so had they applied it would probably have been the preferred option, so we can take it it didn’t apply.”

The location of the proposed new site has been questioned given traffic congestion in the town centre and its proximity to the bus stop outside Age Concern.

Post Office services will be offered from two tills in the shop and there would also be the benefit of longer opening hours.

The majority of Post Office products and services will still be available, seven days a week.

The change is part of a major programme of modernisation and investment taking place across the Post Office network.

Cathy added: “It’s my understanding that no alternative has been put forward, so if we protest too strongly we could risk losing the Post Office. It’s unthinkable for us not to have a Post Office in Kirrie, especially thinking about the older population for whom it’s a primary resource.”
