THE DRIVE to get a new Forfarian community bus on the road stepped up a gear on Monday with the latest £250 Forfar Roof Truss Company sponsorship cheque.
The current bus is six years old, has completed 70,000 kilometres and has reached the end of its working life.
Now the Forfarian Community Bus Trust has begun seeking to raise £25,000 towards the purchase cost of a replacement bus - and its application to the Forfar Roof Truss Award was chosen from the March applications.
Trust chairman Kate McFarlane said: “If we are successful with our fund-raising efforts we hope that a new Forfarian will be on the road in the autumn.
“The Forfarian provides a unique, very affordable transport service for local voluntary groups including churches, disabled and sheltered housing residents, residents’ associations and the elderly and infirm.
“The bus is well used by these groups and for many users is regarded as essential for maintaining social contact.”
The trust, a charitable organisation, has been in operation since 1981 and is run by a voluntary committee. There is a bus co-ordinator and 10 volunteer drivers.
