Help to establish a Sea Cadet unit in the Forfar area

LOCAL ex-sailor John Phillip is asking Forfar people to help him establish a Sea Cadets unit here in the town.

John became interested in starting a group here following his work with the Sea Cadets while he was still in the Navy.

He’s now looking for any adults in the Forfar area who would be interested in helping him start up the group.

There are many roles involved in a Sea Cadets group including committee members, chaplains, instructors and maintenance people. So there is something for all areas of interest and expertise. Cadets have the chance to learn all aspects of sailing and gain Royal Yacht Association (RYA) qualifications.

There are also opportunities to travel to HMS Raleigh, near Plymouth, to learn skills with Naval instructors.

John said: “It’s a great way to get kids active and have fun. It also shows them how to work as a team and to look after themselves.

“It also keeps kids off the street and gives them positive role models to look up to.”

On their website, the organisation states: “Established in 1856 the Sea Cadets was created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme.

“Traditionally old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the unit building.

“The tradition of community-based Sea Cadet units continues today with 400 across the UK each with charitable status enabling them to raise funds to meet their running costs.

“All units are members of the Sea Cadet Corps and are governed by the national charity MSSC - the Marine Society & Sea Cadets.

“We work in partnership with the Royal Navy under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and receive corporate support from commercial shipping companies and the Maritime sector.

“We aim to inspire young people to reach their potential by developing valuable, personal attributes like team working, independence and communication skills through nautical based adventure.”
