Poppyscotland, the charity that runs the annual Scottish Poppy Appeal, urgently needs volunteers to organise the poppy collection in Forfar this year following the retiral of the local area organiser.
Around £9000 is raised in Forfar every November, thanks to the generosity of local people who put money in the poppy tins that are placed in shops, supermarkets, schools and businesses in the town.
All money raised is used by Poppyscotland to provide a range of practical support to members of the Armed Forces community across Scotland but the charity needs to raise more money every year to continue its work.
Preparation for November needs to start now and Poppyscotland is calling for individuals or community groups to step forward to take on the role of area organiser. An area organiser fulfils a vital role by ensuring that poppies are available in their local area during the campaign. Collectors are needed too, to help distribute poppies and get involved in street, shop and house to house collections.
Isla Campbell Lupton, volunteer development manager, said: “We rely on an army of volunteers to organise the Scottish Poppy Appeal and their support makes a real difference to the lives of veterans and their families. The people of Forfar have been very generous in supporting the Appeal in the past and we really need volunteers to get involved to ensure there will be a poppy collection in the town this year.”
