NHS Tayside will be rolling out a new national home oxygen service during July and August.
Under the national service, regular home oxygen supplies will be delivered right to patients homes by Dolby Vivisol.
They will contact patients and make arrangements so that they have the correct equipment and supplies. If a patient has an oxygen cylinder or portable oxygen cylinder normally provided by a local chemist or pharmacist, the supplier will now change to a company called Dolby Vivisol. Patients are not required to do anything about this change. They will be contacted by Dolby Vivisol to arrange their new home oxygen delivery.
There are currently 350 patients in Angus and Dundee using home oxygen. Patients who have a concentrator and need oxygen to get out and about may be supplied with a portabley oxygen supply. For more information they should discuss this further with their respiratory or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) nurse.
Any patient in Tayside who has had oxygen therapy installed since November 2011 and has not yet been assessed or reviewed regarding their home oxygen needs is advised to contact the respiratory team on 01382 496564.
Respiratory Liaison Nurse Team Leader Sandy Rolfe said: “Supporting effective patient services is our highest priority.
This new arrangement is more convenient for patients as regular home oxygen supplies are being delivered straight to their doors. NHS Tayside is working with NHS National Services Scotland to improve patients’ home oxygen service, with potential access to a new generation of lighter portable equipment and more oxygen concentrators.
“We will also now be running weekly home oxygen clinics for new and current patients in Ninewells and Perth.”
From the end of July, GPs will no longer be able to prescribe oxygen cylinders or portable cylinders. This process needs to be completed via the respiratory unit following an appropriate assessment. Once the changeover is complete, patients will need to arrange collection of their old cylinders with their previous supplier.
