The guest speaker at Kirriemuir Probus Club’s recent meeting was guest speaker at Wednesday’s Kirriemuir Probus Club was John Knox, whose subject was ‘Those Were the Folkin’ Days’.
John has been interested in folk music for most of his life, having been involved with the Abbey Folk Club in Arbroath since its early days. Although it no longer meets regularly, the club still organises events for charity from time to time and is now approaching its 50th Anniversary.
In the 60s, performers who would later become household names would start their careers by performing in local clubs and Arbroath hosted, amongst others, The Corries, Barbara Dixon and Billy Connelly. There were also some larger-than-life characters such as Hamish Imlach, and some amusing anecdotes were told of their appearances.
John’s in-depth knowledge shone through, and he performed some of his favourites by writers such as Mat McGinn, Ewan MacColl and Michael Marra, together with a few with local flavour.
Bill Boyle proposed the vote of thanks for a most entertaining session. The next talk is today (Wednesday) when John Thompson will talk on ‘Sir Jimmy Shand’.
