TAYSIDE Police can confirm that the body of a 74-year-old fisherman has been recovered from the River South Esk in Forfar less than three hours after he was reported as missing.
The man had been dropped off at Inshewan Estate at about 11am by a friend who was to join him fishing. When she returned from parking her car moments later, he was nowhere to be seen. She searched the river bank for a time before raising the alarm.
Tayside Police officers – including officers with swift water rescue training – attended, along with Tayside Fire and Rescue, the Tayside Mountain Rescue Team and the Scottish Ambulance Service. A helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth was also scrambled to assist with the operation.
The emergency services are also extremely grateful for the assistance they received from local residents and estate workers in assisting with efforts to trace the missing man.
Efforts to find the pensioner were quickly underway and tragically his body was discovered at about 2.30pm and recovered from the fast flowing water.
The deceased has not been formally identified and his details will not be released until next of kin have been fully informed.
There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.
